Culture Of Death: A Look at Hollywood's Influence On Society

"How old were you when you realized beauty mattered? At what age did you notice that attractive people with expensive clothes got treated better? For some of you the answer is quick and precise and for others you just can’t seem to remember. My generation who are now in their late twenties and early thirties had the luxury of growing up without having the media trash our self esteems. Yes there were beauty magazines with the unrealistically thin women and the occasional reality show but under the watchful eye of a loving parent all of that foolishness was avoided. This current generation however is not granted that same luxury, from the moment they’re born beauty, sex, money, fame, and the pursuit of being thin is fed to them in unhealthy servings every day of their lives.

I was watching TV yesterday and a weight loss commercial came on where people were giving testimonies on the product and one woman said her life was empty and meaningless until she found this product and now that she was thin she could start her life all over again as the person she was meant to be. The commercial ended with a tag line that said live your life the way it was suppose to be lived and get thin today. What type of message does that send? What does that say to people? That we’re not good enough the way we naturally are and if we want to be good enough we have to buy their product and become prisoners in our own bodies. We were are born different sizes some of us will always be thin no matter how much we eat and others will always be a little thick no matter how much we work out. It’s those differences that make us special we shouldn’t have to feel like we have to lose weight to be normal or beautiful, but Hollywood and the media tell us different. On any given day you can turn on the television and see some variation of a weight loss commercial, what many of these commercials focus on is the aesthetic side to losing weight but they never talk about health they never mention that you can be a curvy woman and still be healthy. They make you feel like you have to spend tons of money on surgeries and crazy lemonade diets to be healthy and beautiful. To some that’s a small price to pay to be beautiful, no one wants to be considered unattractive and everyone wants to look like their favorite celebrity. People will pay endless amounts of money to look, dress, and smell like their favorite stars, and companies know this so they get celebrities to be the face of their products because they know celebs sell."
