"Sudan has become nearly synonymous with internal strife in the past years, but on the occasion of South Sudan’s independence on July 9, a group of northerners reached out to give their support to their former countrymen and new neighbours to the south. Both in an online video and with a Twitter hashtag, the northerners have been expressing their 'love from Sudan.'

In a project begun by blogger Mo Elzubeir, Sudanese from the north were invited to record video messages for the citizens of the world’s newest nation to the south. Asking for submissions on his blog and on a message board he wrote: 'This is an open call to any Sudanese who would like to send a message of love to our brothers and sisters of South Sudan.'

The resulting video, posted to YouTube the day the South became independent, features various people speaking to the camera or holding up text cards. Leena Khalifa recorded a message saying, 'I really do hope this independence brings you the peace you’ve fought so long for. I wish you nothing but luck and I can’t wait to visit.'"

"Demonstrations, marches, rallies. For months now hundreds of thousands of Europeans have been expressing their anger at government imposed austerity measures.

Recently those voices have been especially loud in Greece, where the administration is trying to implement a savage programme of spending cuts to avoid the country defaulting on its loans.

But it is in Spain that the protest movement has gained most traction. In mid-May demonstrations that started in the capital Madrid soon led to mass rallies in other major cities, in some cases occupying public squares for almost a month.

The "indignants" as they call themselves, dismantled their last camp in Madrid on June 12, but their commitment shows no sign of waning and many more marches and rallies are planned for the weeks ahead.

So what is driving them? And what do they hope to achieve? A team from Televisio de Catalunya filmed through the first weeks of the May protests in Madrid and Barcelona, and found people angry at their country's economic and political elites."

America's fatal addiction to prescription drugs

"Over the last 10 years, prescription drug abuse – abuse of medications which are legal for distribution – has become a national epidemic. Prescription drugs now surpass motor vehicle accidents as the No 1 cause of accidental death in almost half the states in this country. Last year, nearly 30,000 Americans died from an overdose, with at least half of these deaths related to legally controlled substances that were misused, abused, prescribed incorrectly, or simply just in the wrong person's hands.

Among the startling statistics, the United States now consumes 80% of the world's opioid pain medications and 99% of the world's hydrocodone (semi-synthetic opioid). The milligram per person use of prescription opioids in the United States increased from 74mg to 369mg, an increase of 402%, between 1997 and 2007. Prescription medication abuse is now only second to marijuana in terms of frequency. Prescription pharmaceuticals have become the newest – and seemingly, deadliest – gateway drug we have seen yet; nearly a third of people aged 12 and over who used drugs "recreationally" for the first time in 2009 began by using a prescription drug non-medically.

Controlled substances are regulated by the DEA, which means they are legal medications that can be obtained at most pharmacies for the treatment of pain and other disorders. Unfortunately, some physicians have prescribed these medications in a fashion that has contributed to the abuse problem in the United States. While some doctors prescribe in an obviously egregious manner (purely for profit and recklessly), far more doctors simply lack the proper training to manage these medications – unwittingly contributing to the problem." 'Corrective Rape': Fighting a South African Scourge

this is so crazy.

"It was around 11 p.m. on a Friday in Gugulethu — a township on the edge of Cape Town — and Millicent Gaika, 30, was almost home when a man she recognized stopped her and asked for a cigarette. Gaika obliged. The man then pushed her into a nearby shack and beat and raped her for five hours. Gaika later told police that throughout the assault, her attacker repeatedly said, "You think you're a man, but I'm going to show you you're a woman." Charged with rape, the 43-year-old man is scheduled to go to court on March 15.

Gaika is a rarity in South Africa, indeed in all of Africa, as an openly gay woman. And since her attack, which took place in 2009, she has become something of an icon in the battle against the South African phenomenon called "corrective rape." Virtually unknown to the rest of the world at the time of Gaika's ordeal, corrective rape has since become a hot issue. Through online campaigns, nearly a million people have joined local activists in demanding that the South African government recognize corrective rape as a hate crime. But with so few cases of homophobic violence resulting in trials — and of those, almost none ending in conviction — the activists have a long fight ahead of them."
