Weekend at Burnies (review)
"We make thousands of assumptions every day, and that’s a good thing. For example, if I see a bear looking at me and licking his lips I can assume he’s wants to eat me and get the hell out. Or, alternately, if Lil B and Souljja Boy drop a new track called Swag Money Click Ellen DeGeneres Swag I can assume it’s terrible and save my ears three minutes of pain. Assumptions help us navigate a dangerous and busy world, quickly separating what might kill us from what won’t, what’s worth our time from what’s not. On the whole our assumptions are pretty accurate, but their fatal flaw is that every so often we miss out on the exception because all we can see is the rule. Like Curren$y. I assumed Curren$y was “just” another weed rapper. I was wrong.
Although Curren$y’s just now broken into the mainstream, or at least the rap mainstream, he’s a well travelled industry vet. Originally signed to Master P’s No Limit Records and made part of the 504 Boys, Curren$y relocated New Orleans’ label allegiances and signed with Cash Money before departing the house that Birdman built for more independent waters. Since then he’s released a steady stream of indie albums and mixtapes - including Covert Coup, the project that forced me to admit he was a legit emcee - before finally dropping his major label debut, the impressive Weekend at Burnie’s; because if there’s anything stoners love as much as weed it’s puns and ‘80s movies." "True to their name, on their highly anticipated self-titled debut, rap trio Random Axe, i.e. Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, and Sean Price, have an axe to grind. The trajectory of said axe: somewhere in the direction of rap foes, peons, womenfolk, disrespecters, and those that should’ve heeded the demand to give up the cash when asked. Black Milk, fresh off 2010’s acclaimed Album of the Year, and Stones Throw rhymesayer Simpson rep Detroit and Price, of Brooklyn’s Boot Camp Clik and Heltah Skeltah, put their cities and rap rings together Wonder Twins-style to mete out aggressive rhymes over fascinating beats that suggest they’d put in a bid for hardest rap triumvirate on the hardcore scene.
Random Axe politic about street life and dreams of semi-opulence over attractive Black Milk-produced beats in a straightforward, brash manner. They trade bars and witticisms that recall the kind of taunting one would find as a kid: finger pointing, raucous-laughing, I’m bigger than you so what can you do-kinda stuff. On “Never Back Down,” Guilty Simpson raps: “Who gives a fuck who your hero is/I’ll give that nigga a nice view of himself where he can see both lids.” See? And there’s a litany of Sean Price punchlines to this effect. On “Monster Babies” he goes: “Niggas say you a fool Ruckus/Sniff coke and punch niggas through school buses.” He spews on the bouncy, glittering “The Karate Kid” this: 'My right hook’ll give you a large dent/On the side of your face for fuckin with Clark Kent” then “Ill shit son, what the shotty did/Leg broke, Will Smith son the Karate Kid.'" Shabazz Palaces “An Echo From…”
"Actually the full title of this song is “An Echo From the Hosts That Profess Infinitum” –which is not as long “Reaching A New Refutation of Time and Space” but is definitely weirder. In case you don’t get the connection, Shabazz Palaces is the newest project of Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler who first refuted time and space with the Digable Planets (there might be some other people in the group but he won’t say). In some ways the futuristic Palaces sound is a logical progression from the Planets alien conceit, if not their jazz fetish. But just to keep you guessing that conceit is replaced with an alternate-universe version of Islamic/Middle Eastern history, kind of an Afrocentric answer to what Peter Lamborn Wilson did with his Hakim Bey persona. Except Hakim Bey couldn’t rap."
